Family Says Trust Has Been “Completely Destroyed”

A family in Birmingham says their cat has refused to enter the kitchen for nearly three weeks following what they describe as a “deeply personal conflict” with a robot vacuum cleaner.

According to the owners, the incident occurred after the vacuum unexpectedly activated during the night and gently bumped into the cat while cleaning under the dining table.

Since then, the cat reportedly monitors the machine constantly from a safe distance before retreating upstairs whenever it moves.

“He used to sleep in the kitchen,” one family member explained. “Now he stands in the hallway staring at it like it owes him money.”

Attempts to rebuild trust have reportedly failed. Treats placed near the vacuum remain untouched, while the cat has allegedly begun taking alternate routes around the house to avoid the area entirely.

Pet behaviour specialists say cats can develop long-lasting distrust toward unfamiliar moving objects, particularly automated devices.

The robot vacuum itself has also become unpopular with the family after it reportedly spread cat litter across the floor during a separate incident described only as “the disaster.”

Despite the tension, the family says they have no plans to remove the vacuum cleaner from the home.

“The cat needs to learn,” said the owner. “This is a smart household now.”
